Social Capital and Building Equal Citizenship

Social Capital and Building Equal Citizenship

Bayt Al-Hikma – Department of Social Studies, in cooperation with Al-Baseerah Association for Research and Media Development, held a scientific symposium titled (Social Capital and Building Equal Citizenship) on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the Al-Khwarizmi Hall, in the presence of a distinguished academic and elite audience.
The session was moderated by Professor Dr. Muhsin Abboud Kashkoul from the College of Media at the Iraqi University, and the rapporteur was Mr. Alaa Abdul-Amir Sabr from the Karkh III Education Directorate - Ministry of Education.

The symposium shed light on three main pillars where service and purpose intersect to achieve the robustness of social capital and build equal citizenship; as social capital is no longer merely a theoretical concept in sociology or media, but has rather become the strategic asset and essential pillar upon which societal trust and the stability of society and the state are built.

A group of specialized professors from various research and academic centers participated in presenting research papers. Professor Dr. Jamal Abdul Namous from the College of Media - Iraqi University participated with a research paper titled (Iraqi Women: A Force That Creates Hope and Challenges That Shape the Future), in which he discussed ways to empower women as the core foundation for societal stability, reviewing the role of digital media in facing the challenges they encounter and enhancing their role as an effective strategic force in shaping the future of Iraq.

Meanwhile, Professor Dr. Abdul-Hadi Mahmoud from the College of Islamic Sciences at the University of Baghdad presented his research paper titled (Contemporary Religious Discourse in Digital Media and Its Relationship to Achieving Social Peace), in which he discussed the impact of religious discourse in shaping societal trust as one of the essential pillars of social capital, regulating religious discourse and its diversity in a manner that contributes to achieving equal citizenship, in addition to activating the role of civil society institutions in spreading coexistence and social peace, and the reflection of this on investment operations in the country and community stability in general.

Likewise, Dr. Asmaa Hassan Abboud from the College of Media at the Iraqi University participated with a research paper titled (Public Service Media and the Social Empowerment of Vulnerable Groups as an Approach to Citizenship), which was delivered on her behalf by Dr. Saif Amer Al-Morsoumi. The paper reviewed the role of communication media in empowering vulnerable groups in society, addressing the definition of these groups and their true description within Iraqi society, mechanisms for their development, the role of media in producing awareness programs that develop the skills of these groups, and providing solutions and proposals to concerned authorities with the aim of advancing the reality of this important segment.

The symposium concluded with the reading of the results and recommendations, while Mr. Mohanad Abdul-Hassan, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Bayt Al-Hikma, distributed certificates of appreciation to the researchers and participants in the symposium in appreciation of their scientific efforts.
