From Function to Achievement: The Trajectory of Speech Act Theory from Bühler to Austin
26-08-2026

Bayt Al-Hikma—the Department of Linguistic and Translation Studies, organized today, Wednesday, August 26, 2026, a scientific dialogue session titled "From Function to Achievement: The Trajectory of Speech Act Theory Between Bühler and Austin." It was presented by Dr. Abdul-Zahra Ismail Al-Salem from the College of Arts at Mustansiriyah University, and moderated by Professor Dr. Iyad Ibrahim Al-Bawi, a member of the advisory team in the Department of Linguistic and Translation Studies.

The session featured a number of questions centered around the trajectory of speech act theory among linguists, particularly Bühler and Austin, exploring the core nucleus of the theory, its founding processes, and its development. The researcher also touched upon the importance of context in the study of language and its role in clarifying semantic meaning, illustrating word meanings, and the relationship between the sender's and receiver's communication and its degree of success according to the sender's intentional force and the effect associated with the outcome.

Furthermore, during the session, the researcher indicated the purpose of choosing the aforementioned figures who were the focus of his research paper, the relationship between them, the difference between the locutionary act, the illocutionary act, and the perlocutionary act, the separating boundaries between them, and the possibility of these levels coinciding within the same text, while emphasizing that the process of cognitive transition changes as it is based on the shift of the cognitive paradigm across eras.

The session witnessed academic participation, during which interventions and comments were presented that contributed to enriching the discussed themes. Certificates of appreciation were also awarded to the participating professors in appreciation of their efforts in making the session a success.
